According to Tesfaye, his stage name originates from the weekend when he left both high school and his family’s home, never returning.

Rose produced several songs featuring Tesfaye, who at that time went by names like “Kin Kane” and “The Noise.” He permitted Tesfaye to use the songs, under the agreement that he would receive production credit. Subsequently, Tesfaye uploaded the tracks to YouTube, which rapidly garnered him a substantial following and caught the attention of Drake.

This album was a tremendous success, earning high praise from Drake, who also attended The Weeknd’s initial concerts and later proposed a collaboration. Together, the two Canadian artists toured, with The Weeknd generally serving as the opening act for Drake. Following the release of two additional mixtapes by The Weeknd, he attracted interest from major record labels eager to sign him.
