Born on April 1, 1961, in Blackburn, West Lothian, Scotland, Susan Magdalane Boyle is the youngest of nine siblings, with four brothers and four sisters. Her father, Patrick, a WWII veteran, worked as a miner, while her mother, Bridget, served as a shorthand typist and was also known to sing at a venue called the Bishop’s Blaize. Growing up, she faced bullying and was led to believe that a challenging birth had caused her to be deprived of oxygen, resulting in a learning disability. However, she later discovered that she had been misdiagnosed and actually has Asperger syndrome along with an “above average” IQ. School was a struggle for her, yielding few qualifications, but she did pursue singing lessons from vocal coach Fred O’Neil and attended Edinburgh Acting School.

Career

In 1998, using her savings, Boyle financed a professionally recorded demo that she distributed to record labels, radio talent competitions, and local and national television. The demo featured her performances of “Cry Me a River,” “Killing Me Softly,” and “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina.” Following her audition for “Britain’s Got Talent,” these tracks gained attention online. Additionally, early material, such as her cover of “Cry Me a River” on the CD “Music for a Millennium Celebration, Sounds of West Lothian,” which she contributed to in 1999, also surfaced online.
