Most widely recognized for his portrayal of “Mac” in the acclaimed series “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” McElhenney played a significant role not just as an actor but also as a writer, director, producer, creator, and developer for the show.

In addition to “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” McElhenney has participated in various other endeavors. He co-created and starred in the comedy “Mythic Quest,” which debuted on Apple TV+ in 2020. The series, taking place in a video game development company, highlights McElhenney’s range as an actor and writer.

In 2020, McElhenney and fellow actor Ryan Reynolds made news by purchasing Welsh football club Wrexham A.F.C. Their experiences as club owners were showcased in the TV series “Welcome to Wrexham,” which premiered in 2022.

Early Life

Born on April 14th, 1977, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Rob McElhenney grew up in a family where his mother, Helena McElhenney, was a nurse, and his father, Robert McElhenney, held various jobs. He completed his education at Saint Joseph’s Preparatory School, a private Catholic high school in Philadelphia.

After receiving his high school diploma, McElhenney briefly attended Temple University before shifting his focus to an acting career. He relocated to New York City, where he worked as a waiter while pursuing acting auditions, eventually securing minor roles in both film and television.

His interest in acting emerged during his teenage years, which included performances in school plays and some commercials. In the late 1990s, he appeared in an anti-smoking public service announcement:

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia

At 25, Rob relocated to Los Angeles, where he soon met Glenn Howerton and Charlie Day. Inspired by his tenure in various restaurants and bars, McElhenney conceived a show about a group of egocentric, morally corrupt friends operating an Irish bar in Philadelphia. He presented the concept to Howerton and Day, both of whom eagerly accepted. The trio filmed a pilot episode on a shoestring budget of $200. This pilot caught the attention of numerous networks, ultimately leading them to choose FX.

Since its launch in 2005, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia has garnered critical acclaim and won several prestigious awards. Rob mentions that the show occupies a significant portion of his free time, but he still finds opportunities to engage in other acting endeavors. Noteworthy examples of his roles include guest appearances in Lost and Fargo. With its renewal in 2002, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia became the longest-running live-action comedy series in U.S. history.

In 2020, Rob McElhenney both created and starred in the Apple TV+ web series Mythic Quest: Raven’s Banquet, a narrative that delves into the video game industry while humorously portraying the dynamics among game testers, creative directors, and writers in a fictional game studio. He also co-created and served as executive producer for the 2022 FX sports documentary Welcome to Wrexham, which focuses on the Welsh football club.

Personal Life

In the first season of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, actress Kaitlin Olson was hired by Rob McElhenney to portray the character “Dee,” which led to their romantic involvement. They tied the knot in California in 2008 and are parents to two sons. Rob has referred to his wife as “the funniest woman in show business.”

In November 2020, after establishing a business partnership supported by the Wrexham Supporters Trust, Rob McElhenney and Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds acquired the Welsh football team Wrexham. They initially put no money down, but committed to funding about $2.6 million for infrastructure upgrades. By April 2023, Wrexham had achieved promotion to League Two, claiming the National League championship and marking their return to the English Football League after a fifteen-year hiatus.

In June 2022, McElhenney revealed the launch of a new venture in the entertainment and technology sector called Adim, co-founded with Melissa Kaspers, Chase Rosenblatt, Richard Rosenblatt, and Spencer Marell.
