With a net worth estimated at $70 million, Nelly is an American rapper, actor, and entrepreneur. He first gained widespread recognition in 2000 with his album “Country Grammar,” which has sold over 10 million copies globally, making it his most successful album to date. The smash hits from this album, such as “Country Grammar (Hot Shit),” “E.I.,” “Batter Up,” and “Ride Wit Me,” contributed significantly to his rise in the music industry.

His second album, “Nellyville” (2002), further established his reputation as a hip-hop superstar, featuring chart-topping singles like “Hot in Herre” and the Grammy-winning “Dilemma” featuring Kelly Rowland, which won a Grammy Award in 2003. Currently, Nelly has released eight studio albums, having sold over 21 million records in the United States alone and 40 million worldwide, solidifying his status among the best-selling rap artists.

Apart from music, Nelly has ventured into acting, appearing in films such as “The Longest Yard” (2005) and “Reach Me” (2014). He is also the entrepreneur behind the alcohol brand MoShine and founded the non-profit organization Jes Us 4 Jackie, which aims to raise awareness for bone marrow donor needs in the African American community.

Catalog Sale

Nelly’s music catalog was partially sold in July 2023, with the artist selling a 50% stake to HarbourView Equity Partners for $50 million, which placed a total valuation of his catalog at $100 million.

Tax Problems

In August 2016, Nelly faced a federal tax lien indicating he owed the IRS $2,412,283 in back taxes and penalties, in addition to approximately $150,000 in state taxes. The substantial debt could have led to asset seizure by the government, but the issue was eventually resolved.

Early Life

Nelly, born Cornell Iral Haynes Jr., entered the world on November 2, 1974, in Austin, Texas. During his birth, his father was serving in the Air Force. Following his parents’ divorce when he was seven, he relocated to St. Louis, Missouri. As a teenager, he formed his first band, the St. Lunatics, alongside friends Ali, Murphy Lee, Kyjuan, Slo’Down, and his half-brother City Spud. They experienced local success in 1997 with the single “Gimme What Ya Got,” leading Nelly to pursue a solo career after the group failed to secure a record deal.

Career

Nelly signed a record deal with Universal Music in 1999, and he released his debut album, “Country Grammar,” the following year, which remains his best-selling work. The singles that emerged, including “Ride Wit Me” and “Country Grammar,” both reached the Top 10. His second album, “Nellyville,” launched in June 2002, featured the number one hits “Dilemma” and “Hot in Here.” He followed with “Sweat and Suit” in 2004 and “Sweatsuit” in 2005, before releasing his fifth studio album, “Brass Knuckles,” in September 2008. In 2010, he released “5.0,” followed by “M.O.” in 2013, and “Heartland” in 2021, a country-influenced album that included the single “Lil Bit” in collaboration with Florida Georgia Line. Nelly also worked with

Between 2008 and 2009, he made appearances in four episodes of “CSI: NY.” From 2013 to 2016, he starred in a total of 39 episodes of the reality television satire “Real Husbands of Hollywood” airing on BET.

In April 2015, the Tennessee Highway Patrol pulled over Nelly’s tour bus after an officer claimed to detect the smell of marijuana. Following a search, officers discovered marijuana, drug paraphernalia, multiple handguns, and what they suspected to be meth. Nelly was arrested and taken to county jail, later being released on bail. He faced felony drug possession charges and other minor offenses. However, the felony charge was dismissed after tests confirmed that the substance found was not meth. In December 2015, Nelly pled guilty to misdemeanor charges regarding marijuana possession and drug paraphernalia.

In 2016, the IRS imposed a tax lien of $2.4 million against Nelly due to unpaid taxes.
